Tip #12: Make Your Own Custom Decals

(FYI, this tip was fairly close to being a DIY post, but since it's so dang easy I thought "Whatever, make it a tip!")

Finding the perfect decal for your home, car, laptop, etc can be challenging.  The internet can narrow your search down mighty quick but there's always an issue of accessibility and price.  What if there's a crazy simple solution to get a great-looking decal super easy?  I've got a bestie who showed me this genius tip, so if I don't credit her she's going to make me pay haha! (This tip courtesy of Heather Skinner.)

Use sheets of opaque contact paper to cut out your own custom decal designs.

I know right?  Mind blown.

To start, we Googled a silhouette that's easy enough to trace and grabbed a tube of solid black contact paper.  We taped up a regular sheet of paper onto the computer monitor to lightly trace and cut out a template.  Next, we taped the paper template on the opposite side (showing the design mirrored or backwards) onto the sticky-paper side and cut around the template.  If your decal comes out mirrored, just flip the template over and re-cut.  Now you have your very own custom decal sticker to place anywhere you like!

(Note that it's not reusable, so keep the template if you want to make duplicates.  Also, invest in some Goo-Gone-type sticky removal spray because these may be a bitch to remove.)

What have you used as decal sticker alternatives?  What shapes or designs would you make with contact paper?  Let me know in the comments.
