Tip #16: Decorative Doors With Colored Tape

Lovely Tip #16: Decorative Washi Tape on Doors via www.whatmandyloves.com
The layout of my bedroom is strange.  Twenty-foot ceilings and limited floor space call for ten-foot closets and a nook above.  The placement of the utility closet near the door is at a strange height from the ground and has massive eye-sore doors of painted, heavy wood.  Since I can't just have emptiness ugly-ing up my space, how did I decide to decorate them?  A quick DIY post from Almost Makes Perfect showed me the way to some statement doors using tape.

Use decorative tape like washi tape or colored electrical tape to create a frame or pattern on unsightly doors.

It's made a huge difference!  All I did was measure out from the edges where I wanted my particular frame to sit on the door and got to cuttin' and placin' (the link above has more DIY-like details).  I chose black because I didn't want to get tired of the color after a while or have it clash if the stuff around it changes.  I also have this design on my sliding bathroom door across the room.

Be careful to not use thick tape with adhesive that will damage the doors.  Sunlight could be a factor, too.  I'm renting currently, so when I take this down at my next move I'll have Goo-Gone in hand if need be since electrical tape is thicker.  Washi tape is thin enough to be good for most surfaces, though.  Give it a try!

Excuse the jacket monster on the right.  Aren't these doors fabulous!
